Anger Management Counselling understands that anger can range from irritation all the way to rage. Anger can be caused by outside events (i.e. conflict at work) or internal factors (i.e. ruminating about problems or past events). Anger Management Counselling understands that anger and aggression is a natural response to threats and it has helped human beings survive. Anger increases heart rate and adrenaline thereby better enabling defense against environmental threats. However, some people get angrier than others.
People either express anger or suppress it. Anger Management Counselling understands that when a person suppresses anger, it turns inwardly which can cause hypertension or depression. Suppressing anger can also lead to passive aggressive behavior or a chronically negative outlook and attitude. Anger Management Counselling is based on the premise that expressing anger assertively is the best way to manage anger. Anger Management Counselling teaches a person to communicate his or her needs without causing harm to others.
Anger Management Counselling also uses cognitive restructuring to change the way a person thinks. Anger Management Counselling replaces exaggerated thinking such as, "This is awful and terrible," with "This is frustrating but it's not the end of the world." Most importantly, Anger Management Counselling helps you evaluate any justification for anger and remind yourself "getting angry isn't going to help anything." Anger Management Counselling uses logic to manage the irrationality of anger.
Anger Management Counselling helps evaluate in accurate thinking but also teaches to communicate better. Anger Management Counselling teaches a person to stop "fighting back" but try to resolve the problem or hear what the other person is saying even if it comes across as critical. Anger Management Counselling also teaches strategies involving humor to help people not take themselves too seriously.
Anger Management Counselling understands that not all anger is unjustified and sometimes results from very real problems. Anger Management Counselling, therefore, also supports problem-solving and teaches relaxation strategies, such as deep breathing and progressive relaxation. In addition, Anger Management Counselling helps people find ways to reduce stress and increase well-being by developing healthy living habits.
